G departs Gambit Esports to join Team Spirit

The Russian midlaner changes teams after a month-long stint with Gambit.

The CIS region saw yet another bit of roster news, as Team Spirit announced that it had acquired Sergey Alexandrovich “G” Bragin from Gambit Esports to fill its roster vacancy. Earlier in the month, the team had announced that its midlaner, Igor “iLTW” Filatov, would be leaving the team just a few days after the end of the open roster period. Since then, the team has been playing with a stand-in as it goes through various regional qualifiers. With the addition of G, that midlane position can now be filled on a more long-term basis as the team attempts to gain ground within the CIS region.

G spent a little under a month with Gambit Esports prior to departing to join the Team Spirit roster. During his tenure with Gambit, the CIS squad participated in two regional qualifiers and earned a Top 4 finish in one of them (DreamLeague Season 9 CIS Qualifier). Outside of the Pro Circuit, G helped Gambit Esports earn a 2nd place finish in the OverPower Cup Europe #3, making it to the Grand Finals before losing to 5 Anchors No Captain 1-3 in a Bo5 series. With this move, G transitions to a team with perhaps a more immediate chance of earning spots at Pro Circuit events, though the roster change will apply a penalty to any Qualifying Points that the team manages to earn. That being said, G should be a solid fit to a lineup of experienced and talented veterans of the CIS scene on Team Spirit.

For Gambit Esports, the loss of G is an unfortunate blow, but not one that the team is incapable of recovering from. The team does still have Andrey “ALWAYSWANNAFLY”  Bondarenko registered with the team as a substitute player, so he could be switched back to an active position on the roster and allow the team to avoid a penalty. Gambit has aspirations of moving up the hierarchy in the CIS region, but a change of G for ALWAYSWANNAFLY or any other midlaner from the region isn’t likely to shorten or lengthen the process of having the team develop into a contender. Gambit should be able to recover and continue its growth within the region, but the loss of G surely throws a wrench into the organization’s previous plans.

The roster of Team Spirit following the acquisition of G:
