European squad Going in breaks roster lock to acquire a new midlaner.
Another month begins on the Pro Circuit, and more roster news comes with it as European squad Going In (formerly PENTA Sports) announced a change to its lineup today. About two months after acquiring him at the roster lock deadline, the team will be parting ways with Romanian midlaner Aliwi “w33” Omar. In his place, Going In will be adding Steve “Excalibur” Ye to its roster. The move will also have the effect of making Going In ineligible for a direct invite to the TI8 Europe Qualifiers, necessitating an Open Qualifier run if the team wishes to compete for a spot in Vancouver this summer.
For w33, the move brings to and end a relatively short stint with the European squad, as he has only been a member of Going In and formerly PENTA Sports since February 5. During his time with the team, w33 helped PENTA Sports/Going In earn five Top 4 finishes in regional qualifiers, though the team was never able to qualify for a Pro Circuit event during that period. Though it wasn’t as a member of his now former team, w33 did earn some Pro Circuit experience recently as a stand-in for South American squad paiN Gaming at the Bucharest Major in March, earning a 12th-14th place finish with the team. With w33 now a free agent, there will be much speculation regarding where he will go for the remainder of the season. OG’s roster vacancy remains unfilled unless the team decides to permanently transition its coach into an active player. Aside from that opening, there don’t appear to be any immediately obvious destinations for w33, and it seems highly unlikely that the Romanian player sits out the rest of the season. We shall see where he ends up and what squad is going to be able to add the talented player to their roster in preparation for an Open Qualifier run.
For Going In, the addition of Excalibur gives the team a bit of a new look heading into the last few months of the season. The change does make the team ineligible for direct invites to TI8 or the TI8 Regional Qualifiers, but based on the team’s performance so far this season that may not have been an issue. The team may have come to conclusion that its chances of receiving a direct invite were not quite high enough already, and so the roster change would have a limited effect on them. There is also the possibility that w33 already has a new team lined up, which would have made the roster move for Going In more a matter of necessity than choice. Neither the team nor w33 himself have come forward with a specific reason for the change, though at this point it doesn’t really matter. The move has been made and Going In will have to play through the Open Qualifiers to reach the regional stage of the TI8 Qualifiers. Hopefully, Excalibur’s experience will help to give the team an added edge as it faces down the last months of the Pro Circuit season and prepares for an Open Qualifier run.
