The North American team loses both a support player and its invite eligibility with a late-season roster change.
Just hours after the conclusion of the ESL One Birmingham Major, some serious changes are coming to the North American region. ESL One Birmingham participant Evil Geniuses has announced changes to its roster by removing Rasmus “MiSeRy” Filipsne from the lineup. At the time of writing, Evil Geniuses had not yet announced who will be replacing MiSeRy on the team’s roster, but the team did state that it will providing an update on its roster prior to the start of the China Dota 2 Supermajor later this week.
- Edit: Following the original announcement of the departure of MiSeRy, Evil Geniuses also announced that Clinton “Fear” Loomis will be leaving the team as well.
For MiSeRy, the late-season removal from EG makes the Danish veteran a valuable commodity in the free agent market. With a few weeks left before the start of the TI8 Open Qualifiers, there will still likely be opportunities for the support player to find or build a team to compete if he so chooses. As a 6 time TI participant and TI6 runner-up with Digital Chaos, MiSeRy brings a level of experience and success at the highest level of competition that would instantly make any team better. As of his departure from Evil Geniuses, MiSeRy has not expressed any immediate plans to join another team or create his own, but keep an eye out to see where he ends up over the coming days.
Fears removal from the team brings to and end his tenure with just the second team he has ever played for in his career. This isn’t the first time that Fear has stepped away from EG’s roster, as the U.S. player has seen himself shifted into a coaching or inactive role multiple times over the course of a 7 year span with EG. At this stage in the season, it appears that Fear will not be looking to immediately join a new team and organization for an Open Qualifier run. Stemming from that, the question now becomes whether the veteran player will be looking to find a team next season or if Fear decides to take a step back from the professional scene.
For EG, this move comes as a bit of a shock as the North American squad was in the midst of a pursuit of a direct invite to TI8. The team’s performance over its last few Pro Circuit appearances was not ideal by any means, but with just one event remaining in the schedule, a roster change presents a significant risk for the squad as it attempts to earn a Top 4 finish at the China Dota 2 Supermajor to keep its hopes of a direct invite alive. As of the announcement of MiSeRy’s departure, EG has not indicated who its new 5th player will be, so determining the team’s strength moving forward is somewhat difficult. No matter what the team’s roster looks like coming into the final Major of the year, EG will not be eligible for an invite anyway, as the team has now consigned itself to a run through the TI8 North America Open Qualifier. Time will tell if the team’s roster change comes back to haunt it this summer, or if the alterations help fuel the team to a run through the qualifiers and a spot in Vancouver for TI8.
The roster of Evil Geniuses following the departure of MiSeRy:
- Artour “Arteezy” Babaev (Carry/Mid)
- Syed Sumail “SumaiL” Hassan (Offlane)
