Team Liquid parts ways with MATUMBAMAN

After keeping a stable roster for over 2 years, the TI7 Champion has announced a change to its lineup

The pre-TI roster shuffle has claimed yet another victim, and this time around it is a squad that very few people in the Dota 2 world were probably expecting. TI7 Champion and European powerhouse Team Liquid is the team making a chance to its lineup, with the squad just 10 days away from its upcoming appearance at the EPICENTER Major in Moscow. The player parting ways with the organization is long time Carry Lasse Aukusti “MATUMBAMAN” Urpalainen, as the Finnish player hits the free agent market for the first time since 2015 after spending over 3 years as a member of the Team Liquid roster. The Team Liquid organization did not announce the identity of its new player with its reveal of MATUMBAMAN’s departure, but the team did state that its new member is currently with the roster and will be attending the EPICENTER Major.

As previously mentioned, MATUMBAMAN’s departure from the Team Liquid organization comes after a stint of over 3 yeas with the squad. The Finnish Carry was a member of the 5Jungz roster that was original signed by Team Liquid back in 2015 as part of the organization’s transition from North America to the European region. As a member of the squad, MATUMBAMAN played an integreal role in transforming Team Liquid from a newcomer in the European region to one of the most formidable and successful squads in the history of Dota 2. During his tenure with Team Liquid, the squad claimed 17 non-qualifier event wins and made appearances at 2 TIs, 13 Majors, and 5 Minors. The squad famously won TI7 with MATUMBAMAN in the lineup, and also claimed 3 Minor titles and 1 Major title in the 2017-2018 Pro Circuit season. With that track record of success and an incredible amount of experience playing at the highest level of professional Dota 2, it doesn’t seem likely that MATUMBAMAN remains a free agent for long, especially with the TI9 qualifiers on the horizon.

The roster change for Team Liquid also decreases the team’s Pro Circuit Point total, bringing its total down from 3,525 to 2,820. The move drops the team from a tie for 6th in the Pro Circuit Rankings to 7th, although the squad still holds a high enough total to guarantee itself a direct invite to TI9.

The roster of Team Liquid following the departure of MATUMBAMAN:

Amer “Miracle-” Al-Barkawi (Mid)
Ivan “MinD_ContRoL” Ivanov (Offlane)
Maroun “GH” Merhej (Support)
Kuro “KuroKy” Salehi Takhasomi (Support, Captain)
Roman “rmN-” Paley (Coach)
Mohamed “elmany-” Morad (Manager)
